Evaluation of the use of Intermittent Preventive Therapy and Long Lasting Insecticidal Nets for Malaria Prevalence among Pregnant Women in Nkpor, Nigeria

چکیده

Malaria is the world’s most important parasitic disease ranking among the major health and developmental challenges for the countries of the world [1]. Malaria is an infectious disease caused by the protozoan parasites of the genus Plasmodium, transmitted by a vector, an infected female Anopheles-mosquito [2]. Malaria in pregnancy is an enormous public health problem in the whole of sub-Saharan Africa. It has severe consequences for a pregnant woman and her unborn infant. An infant born to a mother with malaria is more likely to have low birth weight (LBW), which is the single greatest risk factor for death during the first months of life. The risk of maternal death also increases considerably as a pregnant woman suffering from malaria is likely to develop severe maternal anaemia [3]. Malaria mostly affects pregnant women living in rural areas where access to health care and effective malaria treatment is greatly hampered by the poor state of the formal health care system. The main strategies to reduce the burden of malaria in pregnancy are promotion of intermittent preventive treatment (IPT) which is the public health intervention aimed at treating and preventing malaria episodes and use of long lasting insecticidal nets (LLIN). These are nets treated in the factory with an insecticide incorporated into the net fabric through the antenatal clinic platform [4]. Although malaria during pregnancy puts all pregnant women at risk, clinical evidence shows that primigravidae are particularly more susceptible to severe forms of P. falciparum infection than multigravidae [5]. Absence of clinical symptoms such as fever makes it difficult to recognize the disease which therefore often remains untreated. Findings from clinical studies suggest that placental malaria is common and approximately one in four pregnant women has evidence of malaria infection at the time of delivery [6].

Asymptomatic malaria parasitaemia using rapid diagnostic test in unbooked pregnant women in rural Ondo-south district, Nigeria

BACKGROUND Malaria is a major contributor of maternal and peri-natal morbidity and mortality. The disease may be asymptomatic despite sequestration of parasitized red blood cells in the placental micro-circulation with antecedent complications. In such condition, it may also be difficult to identify the malaria parasite by the peripheral blood film microscopy, thus the need for use of simple bu...

Factors associated with risk of malaria infection among pregnant women in Lagos, Nigeria

BACKGROUND Pregnant women living in an area of stable malaria transmission such as Lagos, Nigeria, have been identified as being at an increased risk of the effects of malaria infection. In this area, most of the infections are asymptomatic which means they are overlooked and untreated much to the detriment of the mother and her foetus. The reality of scaled-up malaria interventions with long-l...

Decreasing Burden of Malaria in Pregnancy in Malawian Women and Its Relationship to Use of Intermittent Preventive Therapy or Bed Nets

BACKGROUND The World Health Organization recommends insecticidal bednets and intermittent preventive treatment to reduce malaria in pregnancy. Longitudinal data of malaria prevalence and pregnancy outcomes are valuable in gauging the impact of these antimalarial interventions. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS We recruited 8,131 women delivering in a single Malawian hospital over 9 years. We rec...

Factors Influencing Utilization of Intermittent Preventive Treatment and Long Lasting Insecticide Treated Bed Nets by Pregnant Women in Anambra State, Nigeria

Malaria is a global public health problem and continues to be a leading cause of death and disease in developing countries. The study investigated factors influencing utilization of Intermittent Preventive Treatment (IPTp) and Long Lasting Insecticide Treated Bed Nets (LLINs) for prevention of malaria in pregnancy. Cross sectional descriptive survey design, probability sampling, researcher deve...

Intermittent preventive treatment during pregnancy with sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine may promote Plasmodium falciparum gametocytogenesis.

OBJECTIVES To determine the incidence of gametocytes and the propensity of sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine to promote gametocytogenesis when used as intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy. SUBJECTS AND METHODS This observational non-interventional study assessed the influence of intermittent preventive treatment with sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine on Plasmodium falciparum gametocytaemia among ...
